Market Day in Catania

Vendors compete by singing the praises (and low prices) of their fresh vegetables. Pushy signoras heckle the vendors to get more for their euro coins. And everyone wants to get this done before the market closes down at 1:30 pm for the rest of the weekend. On a Saturday morning, the market in Piazza Carlo Alberto is a busy place to be!

These older ladies are determined to stock their pantries so that the whole family – aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, grown children, grandchildren – will join them for a Sunday lunch. It’s an afternoon-long affair that isn’t over til the last moment of the televised, Sunday evening soccer match.
